Old vs New: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs 2019 Dodge Ram

The Dodge Ram 1500 is brand new for the 2019 model year and while GM has the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 coming down the pipes, the 2018 model still has a lot to offer.

Pricing

Majority of truck buyers tend to spend approximately $55,000 on a new truck. For that money, trucks come pretty well equipped. However some are more well equipped than others. For $54,225, you can have a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the True North LT Plus Package. For $55,190, you can have the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Big Horn. It may not seem like a lot of money between the two, but there’s a lot of differences in the amount of features that you get. Also keep in mind these are 4×4, V8, crew cab configurations.

In the Chevrolet Silverado you get rear parking sensors, dual zone climate control, electronic locking differential, Z82 trailering package, 8” touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HID headlights, remote start, EZ lift tailgate, and remote unlock tailgate.

In the 2019 Dodge Ram, you don’t get any of that. If you do want it, you have to add the Big Horn Level 2 package for an additional $2,895.

Capability

The 2019 Dodge Ram has an advantage over the Chevrolet Silverado in terms of engine performance. The 5.7L Hemi V8 produces 395hp and 410 lb-ft of torque whereas the 5.3L V8 in the Silverado produces 355hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. You can opt for the 6.2L V8 in the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 which produces 420hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, but the starting price is $56,175 and is only available on the LTZ and High Country trims.

But engine performance is not the whole story, payload and towing are equally just as important to truck buyers. The Dodge Ram just edges the Chevy Silverado for payload by just 50 lbs. The Ram is rated for up to 2,300 lbs and the SIlverado for up to 2,250 lbs. Towing capacities have a similar story. The 2019 Ram in crew cab 4×4 configuration can tow up to 11,290 lbs whereas the 2018 Silverado in the same configuration can tow up to 11,700 lbs.

Features

The Dodge Ram 1500 being a new 2019 model and a new generation, has a few more new features that the outgoing Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2018 model doesn’t have. For example, the 2019 Ram is available with air suspension that can raise or lower the height of the truck for easier in and out access. It’s also available with a panoramic sunroof that extends to the back seats.

While the 2018 Silverado may not have the same new features (and admittedly the 2019 Silverado doesn’t have these two specific features either), it can still be very well equipped. From comfort features like ventilated seats and wireless phone charging to safety features such as lane departure warning and emergency automatic braking, you can get everything that you really need.

There is no denying that the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 is a great truck. But the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is not far behind and the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will once again level the playing field.
