Recently there have been rumors swirling that General Motors is interested in bringing back the Hummer. If it does come back, it will most likely not be the same Hummer from the 1990’s that was made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead it will be an electric Hummer.
Now before you roll your eyes at the thought of an electric Hummer, there are quite a few all-electric pickup trucks in the pipeline. Ford revealed the F150 electric, Ram already has a mild-hybrid 1500 pickup, Rivian is currently developing an all-electric pickup truck, Chevrolet quietly announced that they have an electric version of the SIlverado 1500 in development, and of course there is also the Tesla Cybertruck… So there is no shortage of upcoming electric pickup trucks.
The electric Hummer will be branded as a GMC and is expected to be built on GM’s new BT1 platform. It will not be a direct competitor to the upcoming electric Silverado but rather a competitor to the upcoming Ford Bronco but with an electric powertrain.
This new pickup truck, along with other electric vehicles in development, are a part of General Motors’ plan to shift away from internal combustion engines and shift focus towards more electric powertrains and autonomous driving. Last year, GM committed to investing $3 billion at their Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to build electric SUVs, trucks, and vans.
So what are your thoughts on the Hummer name making a comeback? Are you ok with it or do you want GMC to use a different nameplate?
** Update **
General Motors released a teaser of the upcoming electric Hummer at the 2020 Superbowl. It will be officially called the GMC Hummer EV and is said to produce 1,000 hp, 11,500 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60mph time of 3 seconds. The full reveal will be on May 20, 2020
