GMC Introduces The CarbonPro Bed

With production set to begin in June 2019, the GMC CarbonPro bed is the first of its kind pickup truck bed. Constructed out of carbon fiber composite, the bed delivers best-in-class dent, scratch, and corrosion resistance. This should take that toolbox test to a whole new level.

The CarbonPro bed will first appear on the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 and Denali trims as special “CarbonPro Edition” trucks. Coupled with the world’s first six-function GMC MultiPro tailgate, the 2019 Sierra is set to become the most capable and versatile pickup ever made.

Key Benefits

Strength, durability and scratch resistance - Carbon fiber is widely used in supercars (like the Corvette Z06) for its strength and as a result, the CarbonPro bed can take a lot of punishment before showing any signs of wear. During testing, 1,800 lb loads of gravel and 450 lb water filled steel drums were repeatedly dropped to replicate extreme use scenarios.

Corrosion-resistance - Because carbon fiber is not a metal, it is not susceptible to corrosion from road salt or acid rain like steel or aluminum. Because of its natural properties, the GMC CarbonPro bed does not require any sort of bedliner.

Reduced Weight - The CarbonPro bed weighs 25% less than a traditional steel bed, removing roughly 60 lbs of weight.

More Volume - Because carbon fiber is a stronger material than steel, less was required in the construction of the bed. As a result, 1 cubic foot of space was added to an already class-leading volume truck bed. The new CarbonPro bed also incorporates indentations for tires of dirt and street motorcycles as well as two new tie-down points at the front of the bed.

Additional Details

Due to the increased dent resistance of the CarbonPro bed, no wheelhouse liner is required to protect it from rocks being flung off the tires. This naturally saves more weight.

As the overall weight of the Sierra 1500 is reduced by the introduction of the GMC CarbonPro bed, the payload get a slight increase. AT4 and Denali trims equipped with this CarbonPro bed can carry up to 59 lbs more payload (depending on additional equipment and configurations).

The GMC CarbonPro Edition Sierra 1500 will make a limited debut for the 2019 model year with more quantity for 2020 model years.
