The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is already a capable off-road performer. But GM plans to make the Chevrolet SIlverado ZRX to compete against the likes of Ford’s F-150 Raptor and the Ram 1500 Rebel.

Currently, the Chevy Silverado 1500 can be equipped with the Z71 package which adds an Autotrac 2-speed transfer case, an automatic locking rear differential, skid plates, and Rancho shocks. There’s also the Trail Boss trim for the SIlverado 1500 which builds up on the Z71 package with Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, unique 18” wheels, and a factory 2” suspension lift.

The new ZRX trim is set to build on the success of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. It will feature much of the same modifications such as Multimatic DSSV spool Valve suspension, front and rear locking differentials, and improved approach and departure angles via different bumpers from the Trail Boss Silverado.

Unfortunately the new Chevrolet Silverado ZRX will most likely not see any changes to what’s under the hood. It will be offered with the current 6.2L V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission but no boost in power. The current 6.2L V8 produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. By comparison the EcoBoost V6 in the Raptor produces 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque and if anything, the new ZRX will compete more with the Ram Rebel which produces 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Diesel

However, the Silverado 1500 is offered with a new 3.0L inline-6 turbo-diesel so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the new ZRX will be available with a diesel engine. If that were to be the case, it would be the only off-road ready half-ton truck on the market. But we will have to wait and see as it is not expected to go on sale until 2021 as a 2022 model.
